FINAL FANTASY XVI represents the first fully fledged Action RPG in the mainline Final Fantasy series. Players assume control of Clive Rosfield, a warrior caught in a world where mighty Eikons and their Dominants shape fate. Engage in breakneck battle, utilizing the powers of multiple Eikons. Confront rival Dominants in titanic clashes that pit Eikon against Eikon. Master aggressive combat through swordplay techniques and Eikonic abilities, choosing which to learn and upgrade.

The game offers two distinct play experiences: a story-focused mode provides automatic evasion and simplified Eikonic combos for players prioritizing narrative, while an action-focused mode grants full player control over Clive's every move. This allows players to tailor the challenge to their skill level. A demo also includes an "Eikonic Challenge" mode, highlighting the core action gameplay.
