DYNASTY WARRIORS 9 places the player in an open-world Ancient China, continuing the series' tradition of large-scale battles against overwhelming enemy forces. This installment introduces a single, expansive map of China for players to traverse. Gameplay involves progressing through story-driven Key Missions, supplemented by various side missions that influence the overall situation. Players can approach engagements using diverse strategies, including direct assaults, flanking maneuvers, and stealth.
The game redefines its action with the State Combo System, which incorporates "Flow Attacks," "Reactive Attacks," and "Trigger Attacks" that adapt to enemy states and situational context. Interactive Actions allow for environmental manipulation, such as climbing terrain or utilizing explosive elements. DYNASTY WARRIORS 9 features 90 playable characters, including seven new additions to the roster, all participating in the narrative of the Three Kingdoms period.
