Lords of the Fallen Just Got Way Better, Right When It Hits PS Plus

Lords of the Fallen gets a major co-op overhaul on April 3, just days before joining PS Plus. Guest players can now upgrade gear and control progression.

TL;DR

Lords of the Fallen released a massive patch (2.5.338) on April 3 that overhauls co-op multiplayer, expanding guest player freedoms significantly. The timing is perfect, as the game joins PlayStation Plus Essential on April 7 alongside Sword Art Online and Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered. If you're thinking about trying this souls-like on PS Plus, you're getting it in a materially better state than it was a week ago.

If you're planning to grab Lords of the Fallen from PS Plus this month, the timing just worked out in your favor.

Developer Hexworks rolled out patch 2.5.338 on April 3, and it's not a minor update. The co-op changes are substantial. Guest players can now upgrade equipment, socket items, interact with vendors, rest and warp between Vestiges, use Chrysalis Rebirth, plant Vestige Seeds, skip cutscenes, and actually initiate boss encounters. That's a lot of freedom compared to before, when guests felt like passengers riding along for someone else's playthrough.

The game joins PS Plus Essential on April 7 alongside Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream and Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered. Neither of those is a slouch, but Lords of the Fallen is the standout here, especially if you like challenge-based action RPGs and have at least one friend who's also into them.

Why This Timing Matters

Here's the thing: game developers don't usually time major patches to coincide with subscription releases by accident. Hexworks could have pushed this update weeks ago, but they didn't. They dropped it days before the game hits PS Plus, which is the biggest audience it's going to get on console.

That's smart business, sure. But it's also good for players. You're not inheriting a game that's been around for two years, unchanged, suddenly getting a refresh because enough people complained. You're getting it at a point where the multiplayer experience is measurably less host-dependent and more flexible. If you like playing with friends or randoms, the guest experience is genuinely better now.

Non-Shared Progression mode also got an upgrade. Hosts can now choose between Full and Limited guest permissions, which gives you more control if you want a tighter co-op experience or prefer your friend to have more freedom.

Worth Your Time?

Lords of the Fallen is a solid souls-like with a dark fantasy vibe, decent boss design, and enough build variety to make playthroughs feel different. It's not breaking new ground, but it's not a waste either. If you've burned through Elden Ring and want something with a bit less ambition but solid co-op implementation, this is worth trying for free.

The fact that Hexworks is still actively updating it (they said more patches are coming) is also a good sign. This isn't a finished game being put on life support. It's a game still in development, getting better, and you're joining at a good moment.

Just grab it when it drops on April 7. You've got nothing to lose.
