Ampersat is a debut action-adventure RPG drawing inspiration from classics like Gauntlet, Smash TV, and Zelda, while incorporating elements reminiscent of Angband. The game presents over 50 handcrafted levels alongside an optional endless procedural area, tasking players with a unique objective: freeing and capturing letters to restore language to the world of Gentlheim. Character progression is flexible, supported by an extensive skill tree and hundreds of loot items. Ampersat also includes a drop-in local asynchronous co-op mode, designed to be accessible for parents and children.
The game's aesthetic blends retro ASCII art with colorful 3D environments, a nod to early roguelikes, and utilizes Commodore 64 SID chip sound effects alongside original music. Players explore dungeons and towers, battle diverse creatures and bosses, and manage a town hub that offers shops, an inn, and upgrades. The procedural "Well" area provides shorter, loot-focused challenges. Co-op allows a second player to control an invulnerable fairy companion, adding a quirky layer to combat.
